Physiotherapy successful in treating Female Infertility

Women’s Health Update: Physiotherapy successful in treating Female Infertility:

A ten year study of 1,392 infertile women shows those treated with a Physical Therapy approach (Clear Passage Approach)  have achieved pregnancy rates double those of surgery. The multi-site study, which will be published in the peer-reviewed journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (May/June, 2015), is now housed in the U.S. Library of Medicine.

Belinda Wurn developed the "Clear Passage Approach" after she was diagnosed with cancer many years ago leaving her infertile.

"I couldnt have children so this business and this work has been our baby and has been incredibly rewarding," Wurn said.

Now she wants to help other women experience the joy of having children, thorugh research conducted by Clear Passage Therapy.

Researchers claim women treated with physical therapy enjoyed just-as-good if not better than standard medical treatments for most common causes of female fertility.

"Each person is looked at from head to toe and each issue that each person is having is addressed which makes really very different from modern medicine in the respect that it's not one pill fits all," Clinical Studies Director, Amanda Rice said.

The therapy called the "Cleared Passage Approach" costing about $6,000 feels like a deep massage. The twenty hour treatment is broken up in 5 days and focuses on shrinking adhesions, internal scars that form in the body."The research behind us that proves what we do works and in many cases is more than twice as successful as medicine or surgery,"

Belinda Wurn said. The therapy was developed 25 years ago by Belinda and her husband Larry to help decrease debilitating adhesions that formed in Belinda after pelvic surgery and radiation therapy.

The multi-site study was published in the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine earlier this month showing positive results for women infertile due to hormonal conditions. According to the U.S. Office of Women's Health, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), is the primary cause of female infertility because it interferes with ovulation. Over 53% of infertile women with PCOS became pregnant after receiving therapy, roughly double the success rates of surgery and drugs, cited in the study.

Comparable to surgery, 43% of women diagnosed infertile with endometriosis became pregant after therapy. The authors were encouraged that women diagnosed subfertile or infertile due to high FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), which occurs as a woman approaches menopause, had a 39% pregnancy rate.

According to the study, women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) also saw improvement. Pregnancy rates were 56% for women who received therapy before IVF transfers versus the national average of 37% during the decade long study. The largest difference was in women over the age of 40, where participants had an IVF pregnancy rate three to five times higher than the norm.

According to therapists, adhesions may be created because of surgeries, traumatic events such as car wrecks, slips and falls, infections, and any kind of inflammatory process.
The treatment is said to also completely open blocked fallopian tubes which was previously thought impossible without surgery.

"It's not a one shot deal," Wurn said. "Once tubes are opened, they're opened. Once the adhesions are gone, things seem to work as they should have worked when a woman was in her twenties."

It's an alternative giving women hope.

"I think it's very exciting," Gainesville resident, Jenny Frazer said. Women may have been very hesitant to take medical interventions so it's great that there's another option for them. Children are a blessing.

The team at Clear Passage say they are doing studies on people with bowel obstruction and have had success as well-Update by Physiotherapy Jobs Portal

Dry Needling and Physiotherapy

"Dry Needling” offers relief to Physical Therapy Patients :
Andrea Blumenstein on a little-known technique to treat chronic back and neck pain
By Andrea Blumenstein

From chronic pain to sports-related injuries, many issues can lead to a physical therapy referral. Physical therapy includes multiple modalities with decreased recovery time and longer-lasting improvements in mobility, functionality and quality of life. Dry needling is one little-known technique — and though it sounds intimidating, physical therapist Taryn Cohn says she's used it with great results.

"[For patients presenting] with long-standing conditions such as chronic low back and neck pain, as well as more acute injuries like those that occur suddenly at work or during recreational sports activities, I've had amazing success [using dry needling]," Cohn says.

During dry needling, solid, sterile filiform needles are inserted into soft muscle tissue or connective tissue correlated with an injured or painful area of the body. While the needles are the same type used in acupuncture, dry needling is a distinct form of therapy.

Physical therapist Randy Hernandez of the Movement Science Center says one of the biggest differences between the two is that acupuncture uses meridians (invisible energy pathways that are the basis of traditional Chinese medicine). In this philosophy, needles might be placed in the hand to treat an ailment in another part of the body. This is not the case for dry needling.
"The hand would only be needled, for example, if there are symptoms in the hand itself or a neighboring joint that would be directly affected by the location of the needling," Hernandez says.

Physical therapists use dry needling in conjunction with other forms of manual therapy and corrective exercises. Therapists make the decision about what treatments to recommend during an initial visit.
The technique is not new. For more than 25 years, therapists have used dry needling to improve recovery time. "Pioneers in our state have been practicing successfully for around 10 years," Hernandez says.

Dry needling is a treatment option for people with musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle strain, tendonitis and bursitis, along with back and neck pain.

"By eliminating trigger points in muscles, dry needling also takes care of many referred pains, such as headaches and sciatica which are often mistakenly blamed on more serious causes," says Ron Helwig, a physical therapist and CEO of Magnolia Physical Therapy,

Patients can expect a physical therapy session to last 60 to 90 minutes, including both dry needling and therapeutic exercises. At Magnolia, therapists provide approximately 30 minutes of manual therapy that may or may not include dry needling, followed by 30 to 40 minutes of specific therapeutic exercises.

"Incorporating dry needling has considerably cut down treatment duration — meaning patients get well faster," Helwig says. The results are more immediate, and the risk of complications (which include infection and bruising) is low under the care of a trained professional.

Dry needling is gaining recognition as a first-option treatment for many injuries. Cohn incorporates dry needling early in the rehabilitation process if she finds the treatment appropriate and her patients are willing to try it.

"The rapid improvement in the soft tissue mobility this treat-ment provides allows us to move more quickly into a corrective exercise and strengthening program," Cohn says.
This often shortens the duration of physical therapy treatment. However, Cohn prefers not to perform dry needling on a patient more than once a week in order to allow for the body to adapt to the changes.
Overall treatment success depends on whether an individual patient complies with physical therapist-directed home programs. Hernandez sees the greatest success rates when dry-needling patients follow through with both manual physical therapy and therapeutic exercises.

"With dry needling, it is important to reinforce the treated tissues with proper muscle re-education and supportive interventions," Hernandez says.

Most people say the pain of dry needling ranges from minimal to uncomfortable, depending on the muscle tissue and the patient's sensitivity. It is not uncommon to feel muscle soreness after the treatment, similar to the soreness that follows an intense workout. The majority of people receiving dry needling feel pain relief within 48 hours, often much sooner.
The cost of the procedure varies based on insurance and practitioner. Many therapists absorb the cost of the needles because insurance companies do not, Hernandez says.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

For many women who’ve had a baby, “leaking” is simply accepted as a fact following childbirth. Incontinence may be a side effect of labour and delivery in the short term, but it shouldn’t be a condition that lasts long-term.

“In Europe, pelvic-floor physiotherapy is offered as a routine part of public health for women to recover after you give birth,” says Anniken Chadwick, a pelvic-floor therapist at Vancouver’s Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic, in a phone interview. “Because these issues are so common, women think it’s normal to leak. They might laugh about it among themselves in their fitness group and not know that something can be done. Lots of women reduce their physical and social activities due to incontinence because they’re embarrassed.

“For best care and to prevent problems down the road,” she says, “every woman that gives birth should get their pelvic floor checked six weeks afterward to know if there’s scar tissue, if they’re building their strength back, if what they’re experiencing is normal, or if there are other issues that need to be dealt with.”

As its name implies, pelvic-floor physiotherapy targets the sling-shaped muscles that run from the pubic bone to the base of the spine and that hold in place the pelvic organs—the uterus, vagina, and bowel. Treatment involves assessment of the strength of the pelvic muscles and of a person’s posture and breathing patterns, education about the structure and function of the pelvic organs, progressive strengthening exercises, and various physical-therapy techniques to improve tissue mobility.

“It’s just like regular physiotherapy but for the internal muscles, the vaginal and rectal muscles,” Chadwick says. “We treat pain, we treat weakness, we treat tightness, we treat any kind of dysfunction.”

That includes sexual dysfunction in both men and women.

Physio for the pelvic floor can be used to help women overcome pain during sex or reduced sexual sensation; for men, it can treat testicular pain or pain following ejaculation. It can also help with erectile difficulties.

“If there’s weakness in the pelvic floor, we can strengthen it; if there’s tightness, we can teach them [clients] how to relax,” Chadwick says. “If there’s tightness in the muscles or fascia so they’re not getting good circulation to the area, we can work on that.

“The pelvic floor is a really cool muscle,” she adds. “It controls your organs and your bones. It’s related to sexual function, so it’s also linked to your emotions.”

Other conditions that pelvic-floor physiotherapy can address include organ prolapse, constipation, diastasis rectus abdominus (separated stomach muscles), and painful tailbone, known as coccydynia.

All too often, people avoid seeking treatment for problems related to the pelvic floor because they are too uncomfortable speaking about them.

“People are embarrassed about peeing their pants, they’re embarrassed about having any sexual issues,” Chadwick notes. “There’s still so much shame around that area and around having problems there. Quite often, people don’t go and tell their doctor or go and talk to anyone about it.

“I see these issues all day every day,” she says. “They’re far more common than people think.”

Michael Schumacher undergoes extensive Physical Therapy

Michael Schumacher Health update: Signs of recovery, undergoes extensive Physical Therapy:

Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is reportedly showing small signs of recovery, giving renewed hope to millions of fans, and his family members. Since he woke from the medically-induced coma, the driving champion has been rehabilitated to his home in Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Latest reports suggest that Michael Schumacher will now be bound to a wheelchair and undergo extensive physical therapy in order to prevent muscle degeneration.

If Schumacher was to recover, he might be bound to a wheelchair as he undergoes proper physical therapy in order to act more independently and start gaining mobility by himself. The good news is that Michael is not stuck in a bed. When not undergoing physical therapy to avoid muscle atrophy, he sits in a chair in front of the windows of his villa, overlooking on one side the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps, and on the other the shores of Lake Geneva. #KeepFightingMichael

Schumacher is now able to recognize faces, and cries when he sees and hears his wife, Corrina and his two children, Gina Marie and Mick Jr, according to Cross Map. He tends to get emotional when he sees them and is now communicating with family members using his eyes. This can be seen as a sign of improvement and a step towards recovery, albeit a gradual one. Additionally, it also points to neurological recovery, which is definitely a good sign.

The news comes months after his son, Mick, said through a sports commentator that his father was "slowly been waking up."

These positive signs come months after the ace F1 driver woke up from a medically induced coma. Doctors had put him in a coma as he suffered from significant brain damage after his skiing accident. Fans may recall that the highly hardworking and dedicated racer attained severe head injuries while skiing on the French Alps in December, 2013. Schumacher fell on a rock and was rushed to the hospital. While the fall was a bad one, the skilled driver would have instantly died had he not had his headgear on.

Doctors have expressed little hope in Schumacher making a full recovery, but his wife, who has devoutly stood by his side, says she remains hopeful despite the prognosis. Some experts say that it is difficult to determine the recovery of a head trauma patient, while others say he could take three years to fully recover. Twitter fans have taken to social media to express their prayers, support and concern using the hastag #KeepFightingMichael.

Fellow race drivers and members of his home team, Mercedes, have also expressed their support on Twitter.-News update by Physiotherapy Jobs Portal
