SUMMARY
On August 8, the World Health Organization (WHO) had sounded
an international emergency on the Ebola epidemic in four Western African
countries. According to WHO, 2,127 EVD cases have been detected worldwide till
August 13 and the total fatalities caused by it stands at 1,145.Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) outbreaks have a case fatality of up to 90%. EVD is one of the
most dangerous diseases with no known vaccine or cure. It is mostly transmitted
through close personal contact and exposure to bodily fluids and secretions of
an infected person. The countries affected in this outbreak currently include
Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
New Delhi: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhanji has expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure in place at all entry points to the country to detect people arriving with symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). A health facility to quarantine passengers who show symptoms of the Ebola virus has been set up at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi.
A hoax message of the dreaded Ebola reaching Karnataka has been doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp. People are recklessly forwarding a message regarding an M.Tech student of NIT, Suratkal, dying of the disease. Dr Narsimalu K., nodal officer at Gandhi Hospital said, “These are all rumours. All the nodal officers of South India are coordinating with each other and in case of any confirmed case, we will intimate all the states.” Dr S. Ramakrishna said “People must follow hand-washing hygiene very strictly.”

HOW DOES EBOLA VIRUS
SPREAD :
• Human-to-human
transmission: direct contact with blood, secretions, organs or other bodily
fluids. In some circumstances “EVD can be transmitted for several weeks after
recovery from illness. Contact with objects that have been contaminated with
infected secretions can also spread the virus.”
• Animal-to-human transmission: Ebola is transmitted through close contact with blood, secretions, organs or bodily fluids of infected animals, including the consumption of contaminated meat.
• Direct contact with deceased person: Contact with a deceased person infected by EVD can spread the disease.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS :
Normally symptoms will appear between 8 -10 days of
exposure. Timely treatment of EVD is important but challenging since the
disease is difficult to diagnose clinically in its initial stages as early
symptoms such as headache and fever are nonspecific to EVD. If an individual in
the affected region suffers from any of
these symptoms, they should seek medical care. Common symptoms include the following:
• Fever • Diarrhea •
Headache • Weakness • Joint and muscle aches • Vomiting • Lack of appetite •
Stomach pain
Some patients may experience: rash, red eyes, hiccups, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, bleeding inside and outside body.
