Ask Your Physical Therapist: Medicine of the Future

Heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers have been closely linked to obesity. It’s an epidemic that we cannot afford to ignore. America is one of the richest societies in the world with access to more health-care resources and services than many countries could dream of. Yet, we have become careless with an irreplaceable resource: our health.

Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” As a physical therapist, I spend countless hours teaching clients to correct issues that lead to injury or pain. I see physicians getting frustrated with clients who do not invest in their own health. It’s become accepted that it is our doctor’s job to make us healthy. We have become reactive in our approach to our health. The “ounce of prevention” has been devalued.

There is a medicine that has been proven to positively affect an array of health conditions, including managing arthritis, decreasing weight and decreasing or eliminating the risk of developing type II diabetes.

The medicine is exercise.

Exercise is not a dirty word. Poor prescription has given it a bum rap. True fitness can be achieved if you dedicate yourself to behaviors that lead to progressive success. However, history and health trends say that most of us are failing to make it on our own.

The Carlisle Medically Oriented Gym’s (MOG) purpose is to bridge the gap between medicine and wellness. The professional MOG staff will work with clients and their physicians to tailor physical, nutritional and educational programs designed to meet each client’s needs. We will gather data to prove outcomes, and communicate with member’s physicians to coordinate a team approach to wellness.

Author Kirk Ream says, “Being truly fit requires physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual health.” By focusing on being fit to be the best you can be for others, you begin to see new value. The balance created by true fitness can provide opportunity for us to be the best parents, grandparents, husbands, wives, employees, friends and people we can be. We become fit for service.
People have asked, “Is Carlisle ready for something like the MOG?” My home, friends and family are in Carlisle. I believe Carlisle deserves cutting-edge opportunities to promote true fitness.

Thomas Edison said, “The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Check out the MOG if you are ready to “move better, feel better, live better.”
