NASA Technology in Physiotherapy: Anti-Gravity AlterG Treadmill

NASA technology gives Clare athletes a lift:  Space age technology originally developed by NASA is being used at Active Ennis Leisure Complex in County Clare to help improve recovery times, increase mobility and lessen the chance of future injury for athletes and patients.

The antigravity treadmill relies on advanced air pressure technology, which, after calibrating the user’s weight, reduces the load and impact on legs and joints at anywhere between 20 and 100 percent of the user’s body weight to allow them to walk or run.

Physiotherapists throughout the world have hailed the treadmill for its role in expediting rehabilitation for athletes overcoming lower leg injuries, or for patients with a variety of medical conditions such as Strokes, Parkinson’s Disease and total knee and hip joint replacements.

It’s more widely used across the United States where it is a regular feature of the recovery process for injured professional basketballers and American Footballers.

Active Ennis Leisure Complex is the only facility in the Mid West Region to provide public access to an anti-gravity AlterG treadmill which has previously been used by internationally renowned sports stars such as former Irish rugby international Brian O’Driscoll, Barcelona footballer Luis Suarez, multiple tennis Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal  and Irish Olympian Derval O’Rourke.

“We are delighted to expand our offering by providing this new facility in conjunction with an in-house consultant physiotherapist,” commented Tim Forde, Active Ennis General Manager.

“Built in Silicon Valley using the NASA technology, this unique device has proven to be extremely successful in the areas of sports and medical rehabilitation and obesity. It has been utilised by top Olympic athletes, Premiership soccer teams and Irish Rugby players.

“We would invite anyone interested in seeing the AlterG in operation or finding out more about the technology behind the treadmill to call into Active Ennis Leisure Complex,” added Mr. Forde.

“The AlterG treadmill is perfect for individuals who have suffered a lower extremity injury, like an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, hip or foot and ankle injury,” explained Anne Marie Kinsella, a Chartered Physiotherapist who is based with Active Ennis.

“Active Ennis has already received significant interest from sports clubs looking to treat athletes who are recovering from injury or seeking to avoid an injury, as well as patients who are post-operative or trying to prevent surgery. Non-injured athletes have also found ways to utilise the AlterG before and after endurance events. For example, long distance runners can use the treadmill without the impact before a marathon, or equally as a tool for recovery following a long race.

“Even stroke patients can benefit as the AlterG helps to retrain their legs and brain with supported movements,” added Ms. Kinsella.

Huntingdon Physiotherapist beats medics to diagnose rare Brachial Neuritis condition

Huntingdon Physiotherapist beats medics to diagnose rare Brachial Neuritis condition

A Physiotherapist from Huntingdon has successfully diagnosed a rare debilitating condition which had left medical professionals stumped.
The discovery by extended scope practitioner Emma James came after 58-year-old Melodie Francis suffered severe pain in her shoulder despite being previously fit and healthy.
Melodie, from Hemingford Abbots, was referred to Emma by her GP after a number of prescribed medications did little to alleviate her pain.
It was then that Emma, who works for suspected Melodie might have developed Brachial Neuritis, an inflammation of the shoulder, arm and hand nerves which can eventually damage muscles and reduce mobility.
Emma explained: "Brachial Neuritis usually only affects men and I've seen just four cases in the last year.
"It can be very difficult to diagnose because severe shoulder pain can have lots of different causes.
"But Melodie told me that she had recently suffered a series of chest infections and Brachial Neuritis is often preceded by a viral infection, so I arranged for a series of tests that were needed to confirm my suspicions and rule out other conditions."
Melodie, a former nurse with the Addenbrooke's palliative care team said: "I started feeling pain in my shoulder after leaving work one evening, but by the next day the pain was unbearable.
"It took some time for a confirmed diagnosis, but I'm really grateful to Emma for her expert help.
"Unfortunately, there is no cure, but the right medication can help alleviate the symptoms and people do sometimes improve over time.
"The condition has left me with some disability and weakness in my shoulder, but I consider myself lucky as it can lead to paralysis."
Everyday tasks are more difficult for Melodie now, but she has learned to compensate and just get on with life.
Melodie continued: "My grandchildren know that 'grandma has a poorly arm' and even the youngest ones know to go to my right side now.
"I can't swim anymore but I go to the gym and 'spinning' helps my mobility.
"I also have difficulty sitting for long periods or travelling, as the condition has left me with a protruded shoulder blade which makes it uncomfortable.
She has now been discharged from the physiotherapy service but can self-refer if she needs to.

Physiotherapy referrals key to improving care in the bush:

Physiotherapy referrals key to improving care in the bush

Empowering physiotherapists to refer direct to medical specialists with a Medicare rebate will bolster patient care in regional and remote areas, according to the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

APA president Marcus Dripps said state and federal governments must invest more into advancing physiotherapy opportunities, such as changing legislation to enable physiotherapists to refer with a rebate, in a bid to improve care for rural and remote patients.

“Patients of physiotherapists in rural areas, who already have restricted access to the medical specialists because of chronic shortages, have an additional hurdle…when accessing the most suitable medical practitioner,” he said.

“The extra doctor visit also carries a Medicare cost, takes up the GP’s time and resources, and patients also carry the cost of gap payments.”

New Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures show rural and remote Australians face greater barriers to health care, including cost and longer waiting times, compared to people living in major cities.

In 2013-14, 12.9 million people (82 per cent) living in outer regional, remote or very remote locations aged 15 and over visited a GP at least once in the previous 12 months.

The report shows six per cent of people were more likely to delay seeing or not see a GP because of cost while almost a third waited “longer than they felt acceptable” to get an appointment with a GP.

About 33 per cent of people living in outer regional, remote or very remote locations who visited an emergency department in 2013-14 presented at ED because a GP was not available.

Under current legislation, physiotherapists must refer patients to a GP to ensure patients qualify for a Medicare rebate.

In its pre-budget submission, the APA said physiotherapist referrals will reduce GP visits by about 737,000 a year, increase specialist medical practitioner consultations by 55,521, and deliver more than $2.1 million in savings to patients while shaving $3.6 million from the federal health budget every year.

With about a quarter of APA physiotherapists living in regional and remote areas, Mr Dripps said physiotherapy referrals with rebates will benefit the economy and health care system while enabling GPs to spend more time on clinical care.

“There is an urgent need to improve access to physiotherapy in rural and regional areas,” he said.

“We’re urging state and federal governments to invest more into advancing physiotherapy opportunities to ensure better care for patients in rural and regional areas.

“This comes through increasing funding and resourcing, providing greater career opportunities, enhancing technology and reducing legislative barriers.”

Research in Physiotherapy- The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro)

The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) has identified the most important trials to have influenced the practice of physical therapy. They include studies in back pain, sports injuries, ageing, stress incontinence and pulmonary and stroke rehabilitation.

PEDro, which is an official professional partner of WCPT, indexes reports of more than 28,000 guidelines, trials and reviews and has published the list to celebrate its 15th anniversary. It compiled the list having asked PEDro users to nominate the most significant physical therapy trials ever published. Nominations were judged by a panel of international physiotherapy trialists.

“The randomised controlled trial is the backbone of evidence based physiotherapy,” said PEDro Manager Anne Moseley of the George Institute for Global Health and the University of Sydney, where PEDro is based.

“These are ground-breaking trials that changed the way people are treated for a variety of conditions seen by physiotherapists and other health professionals. Some set the stage for breakthroughs, some represent a paradigm shift, and all of them mark important milestones in the evolution of physiotherapy treatment.”

The 15 top trials are:

“This is a fascinating list,” said Tracy Bury, WCPT’s Director of Professional Policy. “Not everyone will agree with it, but it is a great illustration of how gathering evidence from high quality research has changed the practice of physical therapy for the benefit of patients.”

“WCPT is proud of its professional partnership with PEDro. We believe that it is an essential resource that informs evidence based physical therapy worldwide, and helps provide better services for those needing physical therapy. We’d like to congratulate PEDro and the team involved from the beginning on their 15th anniversary.”

Healthy Weight for a Healthy Back

An Article published in the Hindu News Paper on Back Surgery and the importance of Exercises to be done under the supervision of a Physiotherapist.

Quick recovery is what everyone wishes post back surgery. But there are various things which need to be taken care of for quick rehabilitation. Whereas it cannot be denied that the success of the surgery depends on the skill of the performing surgeon, various precautions, if taken by the patient or his attendants, can improve the chances of quick healing.

First and foremost is following the doctor’s advice diligently and taking medicines according to their prescriptions. Many a times it is noticed that patients change the dosage on their own. This can be harmful.

Physical exercises can aid greatly in recovery. But due care should be taken that no wrong exercise is done and exercise during the recovery period should be done in the presence of an experienced Physiotherapist.

There are few lifestyle changes that if adopted well can help enormously in the course of recovery. Smoking is to be completely avoided as it interferes with the immune system and slows down the recovery. Excessive drinking is also to be avoided as it causes choking of the nerves. Alcohol increases sedation if consumed with pain killers or muscle relaxants.

Keeping a check on your sleeping patterns also helps a lot in the course of recovery. Medicines taken post surgery often disturb the normal sleep cycle. People either sleep more than usual or don’t sleep at all. It may take some time to get back to the regular routine, so don’t take any stress. Stress can further delay the recovery.

Avoid sitting for long hours; instead go for small walks after a certain period of time as suggested by your doctor. Sitting in the right posture is equally important. Prolonged sitting and that too in a wrong posture can cause enormous stress on your back.
Post surgery one should avoid bending forward and lifting heavy objects.

Maintaining your weight is very important post surgery. Excess weight results in extra stress on the weight bearing structures like the discs in the spine. Maintain a healthy weight for healthy back. Eat healthy and nutritious food and completely avoid junk food. Healthy food nourishes the entire body thus helping in the healing process. Eat food which is rich in fibre content e.g. bran and fruits are very important. Also drinking regular eight glasses of water is necessary as adequate intake of fluids is also a must and aids in quick recovery.

Regular walking, stretching, isometric and extension exercises to strengthen the core muscles can do wonders in speedy recovery of the post lumbar or cervical spine surgery.
Most importantly, having a positive attitude can do wonders. Being prepared for the surgery, helps in developing a sense of confidence which further may help in the path of quick recovery.
